Stause was born in Draffenville (Kentucky). She was a student at Murray State University and received her B.A. She started performing in theater in 2003. Her middle name, Chishell was a portmanteau that was created out of the peculiar circumstances surrounding her birth. Her mother went into labor in Shell Station and Chris, her attendant helped her deliver the baby. Strause dispels gossip about her child's birth in her memoir. She also revealed that her mother was having issues with her car and drove into the gas station. As she waited for her turn, she was admitted to pre-labor and was assisted by the car attendant to get her to the hospital. Strause was born in an in-hospital. Her mother split with her biological father, who was half Japanese/half Spanish prior to her knowing she was expecting. Jeff is her stepfather. When she reached 10 years old, her parents struggled with mental and addiction. Following that, she joined the Worldwide Church of God. Her mother was never able to have a steady job and Strause describes her as having a free spirit and self-righteous.
